1. General information
This subject aims to consolidate students knowledge at a level equivalent to A2 of the CEFR in its different aspects (grammatical, lexical, phonetic, discursive, sociocultural and sociolinguistic)
It is intended that by the end of the term students have increased their ability to read, understand and produce texts in English without having to continually resort to the dictionary. They will also have reinforced their knowledge of basic grammatical structures , expanded their vocabulary and increased their ability to understand and be understood in spoken English. This subject seeks to complement the students' philological education by learning a second language.
It prepares students for integration into an academic world in which English is increasingly becoming a lingua franca. The approach and objective of the subject are aligned with the following SDGs: 4.5, 10, 16 and 17.
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
- Ability to communicate orally at a basic level in English.
- Ability to communicate in written form at a simple level in English.
- Ability to grasp the main idea of simple texts written in English in their field of specialization
- Ability to understand oral texts at a basic level in English
- Ability to understand written texts at a basic level in English
- Ability to synthesize, transfer and exchange basic written information in English
- Ability to synthesize, transfer and exchange basic information orally in English.
- Ability to write in English diverse elementary texts within the scope of their specialty.
3. Syllabus
1A. Eating in and out: Food and cooking; present simple and continuous, action and non-action verbs; short and long vowel sounds.
1B Modern families: Family, adjectives of personality; future forms: present continuous, going to, will/won't; sentence stress, word stress.
2A Spending money: Money; Present perfect and past simple.
2B Changing lives: strong adjectives, sentence stress, stress on strong adjectives.
3A Survive the drive: Transport; comparative and superlatives.
3B Men, women and children: Collocation: verbs/ adjectives + prepositions; articles: a/an, the, no article.
4A Bad manners: language; modals of obligation: must, have to, should.
4B Yes, I can!: ed/-ing adjectives; can, could, be able to; reflexive pronouns.
4. Academic activities
Eminently practical subject, most of the sessions will be dedicated to exercises that will include all the competencies that students must develop. Through various individual and group tasks, they will not only learn the linguistic elements necessary for this development, but, above all, they will use the English language at a practical level as an instrument of oral and written communication in the contexts and situations specified to consolidate the A2 level of the CEFR.
Theoretical and practical classes in which the different grammatical and discursive aspects of the English language are explained and the resources and strategies learned are put into play by means of listening, role-playing, debates, etc.
5. Assessment system
The course will be evaluated only in the global assessment modality by means of the following activities.
FIRST CALL:
Global assessment test (100%). This test will consist of written and oral comprehension exercises (grammar, vocabulary, phonetics, writing, reading and listening).
Part 1: (65% of the grade) consisting of a multiple choice test of short questions (50%) and grammar and vocabularyexercises (15%)
Part 2: (35% of the score) which will include a Reading Comprehension Test (10%), two Listening Comprehension Tests (10%), an essay in English (10%), and a phoneticsexercise (5%).
In order to obtain a passing grade, a percentage of no less than 60% of the total exam must be achieved. In all cases, the evaluation will be based on the correct assimilation of the teachings given in class and, therefore, on the correct use of the English language at the required levels. (A2.2)
SECOND CALL FOR APPLICATIONS:
Overall evaluation system identical to the first round.
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA for all the calls: presentation, formal and structural correctness, grammatical correctness, lexical richness and precision.
The final grade will be transformed from the interval 0-100%, in which 60% corresponds to 5, to the grades of the 0-10 scale.
